Meet your midwives

Abby Shinn

I was 12 when I first heard the word “midwife.’ Being way too young and inexperienced in life to dive into midwifery, (puberty was enough!) I began to study complementary topics such as nutrition, herbal medicine and reiki throughout my teen years. In 2006, I enrolled at Prescott College and decided to use my time there gathering education and skills that would complement my future in midwifery. I graduated in 2010 with a Bachelors of Arts in Human Development with an emphasis in Holistic Health. During that time I also became a Licensed Massage Therapist and completing my training as a doula with toLabor. After graduation I continued to serve as a massage therapist, organic veggie farmer, and doula.

With the birth of my daughter, at home, supported by my amazing birth team, I got to experience the incredible power of childbirth and after that I knew I was ready to dive in.

Since then, I have studied with Elizabeth Davis and completed her Heart and Hands courses and I am currently enrolled in the National College of Midwifery completing my didactic work while apprenticing as a Student Midwife with Jessica Mairs LM and Melanya Gonshorowski LM of Sierra Homebirth. I have attended over 30 births in the past year of working with Sierra Homebirth and occasionally take doula clients outside of the practice if time permits. I also offer placenta encapsulation and I am certified and up to date with Basic Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation.

I feel incredibly honored to serve families during some of their most tender times and I continue to be amazed at the power and transformation that the childbearing year brings.
